Good morning, Labas rytas,
A selection of my Emergence series artworks are on permanent display in the newly built neurobiology research laboratories of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. This hospital and its laboratories are part of the University of Toronto. I completed my residency training there and was on staff as a professor of neurology for three years before moving to Chicago.
Artistically, this series has evolved, emerged, from previous ones. Neuronal drawings were subtracted from the background color, revealing deeper layers of underlying artworks, thoughts and memories. The transformed images are photographic works that I had previously shown in art exhibits internationally. The neuronal arborizations reveal underlying artistic processes and creative thoughts. From neuronal complexity art emerges.
In Emergence the artworks have had design elements, compositional details and colors modified. Most significantly, in each piece, my own MRI brain scan images, and my own electroencephalogram tracings (brain waves) have been incorporated. The scans and tracings appear in multiple different locations in each artwork. The MRI and EEG elements are subtly present, difficult to find, but discoverable. These art works have emerged from my own brain’s structural organization, my own brain’s electrical activity.
These pieces are displayed in many locations, throughout the newly built buildings in downtown Toronto.
Having been born and raised in Toronto, it is natural that many of my artworks incorporate Canadian themes. For example, in Waves/Slave, the long green piece, the underlying image is of ripples on the surface of Great Slave Lake from a stone I had thrown into it. In Non-Isolation/Displacement, the long purple piece, the underlying image is of stones that I transported from Ellesmere Island and left on Victoria Island. These are all locations in the high Canadian Arctic.
It is an honor for me to have my art displayed at the hospital where I worked. Also, I was born at Toronto General Hospital, which is just steps away. This feels like coming home.
I have created a two-minute YouTube video of these pieces in which you can see more details. It can be accessed by clicking HERE. Further information about this series can be found HERE.
Sincerely, Pagarbiai,
